Did you, at any point, feel like the start of this year has been a bit of a slog? If so, you’re not alone.
Many of us set big intentions in January, only to find ourselves exhausted and unmotivated by March. Modern life pushes us to maintain the same level of productivity year-round, but that’s not how nature—or our biology—works.
The good news? Spring is here, and this shift can be a game-changer for energy, clarity, and momentum.
The Science Behind Seasonal Energy Shifts
For centuries, people lived in sync with the seasons. Their food, activity levels, and sleep patterns changed with daylight, temperature, and nature’s cycles.
Even though modern life often ignores these shifts, our bodies and minds still respond to seasonal changes.
Circadian Rhythms & Light Exposure → Longer daylight hours in Spring increase serotonin & dopamine production, making us feel more alert, motivated, and creative.
Melatonin & Sleep Cycles → In winter, increased darkness leads to higher melatonin levels, making us more fatigued and sluggish. In Spring, melatonin drops, helping us feel naturally more energised.
Temperature & Physical Energy → Warmer temperatures promote circulation and movement, making it easier to be physically active.
Yet, despite these natural cycles, we’ve been conditioned to believe we should be operating at the same level all year long.
Winter asks us to rest, but we push through.
Spring invites us to grow, but we’re often still stuck in winter mode.
If you’ve been feeling low-energy, unmotivated, or off-balance, you weren’t failing—you were just out of sync with the season.
How to Work With Spring Energy (Rather Than Against It)
Spring is not about hustling harder—it’s about leveraging natural momentum to create clarity, progress, and alignment.
1. Reset Your Body’s Energy
Spring naturally calls for movement, but if you’ve been feeling sluggish, you might need to wake up your energy first.
✔️ Gentle movement practices like stretching, yoga, or Tai Chi help shake off stagnation.
✔️ Morning sunlight exposure helps reset circadian rhythms and boosts serotonin levels.
✔️ Breathwork techniques (like box breathing or humming bee breath) can help activate the nervous system for more clarity & focus.
💡 Try This: Start your day with 5 minutes of movement and 5 minutes of deep breathing to set your energy for the day.
2. Align Your Mindset & Goals with the Season
Spring is a season of fresh starts, but that doesn’t mean rushing into action mindlessly. Instead of forcing yourself into a rigid plan, think of it as a planting season.
✔️ Reassess your goals—Are they still aligned with what you truly want?
✔️ Set intentions for the next phase—What do you want to cultivate between now and Summer?
✔️ Work with Spring’s growth energy—Break big goals into smaller, sustainable steps.
💡 Try This: Take 10 minutes to revisit your goals and ask yourself: What’s one new habit, mindset shift, or project I want to “plant” this season?
3. Clear Out Stagnation—Physically & Mentally
Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home—it’s also for your mind, habits, and environment.
✔️ Declutter your space—Physical clutter = mental clutter.
✔️ Clear out old thoughts & patterns—clearing mental clutter creates room for new growth, opportunities, and possibilities.
✔️ Make space for what’s next—Ask yourself: What do I want to welcome in?
💡 Try This: Set aside 30 minutes this week to clear out a small space—your desk, your inbox, or your wardrobe. See how it shifts your mental energy.
You can also spend some time considering these questions:
What narratives or beliefs have I been carrying that no longer serve me?
Are they actually true, or just familiar?
What is a more up-to-date and empowering belief to replace this with?
What This Means for Productivity & Performance
If we worked with natural energy shifts, instead of fighting them, we’d be more productive, less burnt out, and more in flow.
🍂 Autumn → A time for taking stock, refining, and completing.
❄️ Winter → An opportunity for deep thinking, reflection, and integrating lessons.
🌸 Spring → The best time for momentum, creativity, and fresh action.
☀️ Summer → Time for peak energy, visibility, and full expansion.
Moral of the story… If you’ve been feeling off-balance, tired, or out of sync, you weren’t failing—you were just in the wrong season!
